Climate

Sydney has a subtropical climate, with the typical daytime temperatures in May ranging from 12 - 20 degrees Celsius.

Entry into Australia

Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you will need a visa to enter Australia. All other passport holders must apply for a visa before leaving home. Visit www.immi.gov.au for more information.

On your arrival at Sydney Airport

Please note that all food, plant and animal related material (such as feathers, skins or bone) must be declared on arrival and will be checked by officials.  If in doubt, declare it.  The process is usually very efficient, but failure to declare prohibited goods leads to severe penalties.

Public transport

Paper tickets are no longer available on public bus, train or ferry services anywhere in Sydney.  To use these services, travellers must purchase and credit an Opal Card, the touch-on touch-off payment method.

Train Services 

Sydney Airport is located just 13 minutes by train from the city. There are train stations located at both the International and Domestic terminals on the Airport Link line, for more information click here

Bus Services

Sydney Buses operates a timetabled service, Route 400, between Bondi Junction and Burwood which stops at both the International (T1) and Domestic (T3) terminals. Clearly marked bus stops are located on the arrivals level outside each of these terminals. Shuttle Services

For door to door transfers, accommodation, tours and attractions please go and see our new ground transport travel desks; desks are located at both T1 and T2 arrivals lounges. If you wish to pre-book your transfer before your arrival into Sydney please go to the Redy2Go website.

Taxi Services

Each terminal has its own sheltered taxi rank with supervisors on hand during peak times to ensure a smooth flow of taxis for travellers.

Kerbside supervisors can also organise taxis with baby capsules, wheelchair access, five-seaters and maxi taxis for larger groups or station wagons for large amounts of baggage.

Currency/Banking

The currency used is the Australian dollar. Banking hours are usually 0900 -1600hrs, Monday to Friday. Automatic Teller Machines are well spread throughout Sydney’s business district. International credit cards are accepted throughout the country banks, most hotels and city stores.

Dress for all scientific sessions is smart casual.

Electricity

Australia uses a 240 volt 50 cycle system with 3 pin flat plugs.

Good and Services Tax

Goods and Services in Australia are subject to a 10% tax (GST). This tax is usually included in the price and if not, it is clearly stated. The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) enables travellers to claim a refund of the goods and services tax (GST) and wine equalisation tax (WET) paid on some goods bought in Australia. Visit the Australian Customs website for details about what you can claim and how.

Insurance

It is strongly recommended that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance to cover the duration of your visit to Australia.

Name Badges

Name badges will be given to all delegates on registration. We ask that you wear your badge at all times, including social functions. Entry tickets will be given for all social and optional events.

Venue Parking

There are many carparks in the Darling Harbour area near to the Sydney International Convention Centre.  Further information on parking and applicable charges can be found here.
